A Scratch Sharks Team beat Adur 3-1

The Sharks continue to struggle to field the same 6 players for another match and this time were helped by Andy Lay and Trees as both Paul and Tim were unable to play due to work commitments.
The Sharks lost the first set as they adjusted to the new line up, but came back strongly in the second set with some canny tips from Jon and good hitting from Eber and Luis through the outside.
A slight wobble in the third set until a great pick up from Eber and improved hitting from Lars through the middle. The Sharks cruised to a 3-1 victory and how to have a full squad for the next match.

Devils beat Dolphins2 3-0

Sintija returned for the Devils who only had 6 players for their match against Dolphins2. The Devils eased to a 3 set victory thanks to some strong serving and the Dolphins struggling to return serve. Sintija served out the first set with nearly 20 serves in a row with strong "musical" support from the side lines. Despite little coming back from the opposite side of the court the Devils maintained a high standard and won the second set without any problems. Some good hitting down the line from Emma in the final set once she finally managed to find her range and hit the ball the right side of the line ;-)
Good concentration, strong serving and hitting for three sets resulted in the 3-0 victory and MVP for Trees.

Referees Course

As the last referees course was oversubscribed there is to be another on the weekend of 26/27 January at Ashcombe, Dorking.
We could do with more qualified referees in the Club. If anyone is interested please let Nigel Or Paul know as soon as possible. Best way is to respond to Nigel's email or speak to him or Paul at training.

Please can we remind each team that you must provide enough players to officiate at others double header fixtures. Ideally you must provide 1st and 2nd ref's, two people to score and two line judges. Please can we start to get more people trained to use the score sheets which really are not as hard as they look to get filled in correctly. It is each teams responsibility to ensure you provide enough officials and ensure they either arrive before your match or stay after you have played.

Thanks "the Management"........

Sharks beat Kings 3 - 1

Sharks were struggling to field a full team with Paul and Jon both unavailable so Andy stepped in from the Vipers to coach and play for their match against Kings2.

The Sharks won the first 2 sets with relative ease once they got used to playing with a 2 setter system again. Strong serving kept Kings under pressure along with consistent hitting from Lars through the middle and Luis through the outside.

Tim varied his set well and managed to find the line with some reverse hitting to keep up the pressure early in the third set, but Kings rallied to take it to a fourth set. The Sharks dominated the set with good hitting from Eber and Jan. Kings did not help themselves by trying to dispute decisions with Emma who, as usual, was not taking any nonsense! Luis picked up MVP and the Sharks look forward to their next match where they will hopefully have less problems getting six players together, but I just hope they will be able to cope without the strong serving of their guest Viper ;-)

Sorry for forgetting to take team pictures, but probably best to wait until you have a full team anyway!

Devils

The Devils were the SVA league and cup winners last season and are coached by Viper Nigel Jupp.

Here are some pictures from their recent win against the Demons.

Devils Vs Demons by Debbie

It was like strawberry ice cream vs mink choc chip; everyone has their favourite, and its hard to call the winner, but despite the huge fight and temptation of French fancies, the Demons sadly lost 3.0 to those first team beauties once again!
Each nail biting set saw the demons flying around court, and steeling some cheeky points,  there was moments of elation and triumph, but despite the roars of ALLO ALLO..erm I mean Allez, allez, and load hand slapping team spirit, a lack of football skills  and Peach’s best serve of the season...all was not lost as the Demons came up trumps with  darn fine cheese scones...
Well done to the POM; Sabrina Farley..it was putting your sister off that clearly won you the honour!
The excitement never ends...which cake will Sabrina bake????

Demons

The Demons play in the Sussex Volleyball Association Ladies Division and are coached by Mickey Earle.

Sharks v Hastings Match Report from Paul H

Sharks Travel to Hastings
Sunday 11th November saw a depleted Sharks Team head to Hastings.
Tim was sunning himself in Mauritius or somewhere equally exotic which meant that Jan had to play out of place and take the role of opposite.

With 15 mins until the 1st set we were still waiting for John and Eber to find the location and Paul was looking at his watch.
With the mighty 6 Sharks finally in place and ready to take the court the match began.
The Sharks were asleep for the first set and were played off court and finished 9-25
The second set saw new vigour from the sharks and with Paul managing to get 6 serves in a row with great blocking and defending from the whole team Sharks took the set 25-15
Sharks continued to play well but Hastings stepped up a gear and began to attack in the 3rd.
Sharks lost the 3rd and 4th Sets 21-25 & 19-25.

John Gauntlet took the player of the match for his constant hitting and blocking. It was a long drive to Hastings and the Sharks were disappointed with the result. That said all the team played well and kept their heads up playing well.
Sunday 18th sees Sharks playing at home to Kings player numbers permitting.

Vipers Beat Storrington 3 - 0 - Report from Mark....

Vipers took on a new team to them in Storrington on Sunday. It proved to be competitive game as have all the games to date been in what is probably the strongest Sussex league in several years.
Vipers started set 1 with Jimmy and Mickey playing as passers hitters, Andy C and Paul (in for the unavailable Nigel) through the middle, Damien opposite, Andy L setting and Richard libero.
Vipers started well with strong defence and serve receive allowing Andy L to spread the attack and use our full hitting power. Storrington were fighting well in defence but were struggling to attack against a strong Vipers block. A few service runs from Jimmy and Damien allowed a gap to open and Vipers won the set convincingly. The team also adapted well when looking at different options Dom came on for Andy L to play opposite with Damien changing to set.
Set 2 started with same line up and went to a similar pattern until mid way through the set when an injury to Matt L who had come into the game for Paul disrupted the team slightly and a few to many unforced errors crept in and allowed Storrington to come back into the game. Dom again came into play opposite with Damien switching to setting and the team managed to step back up and win comfortably again.
Set 3 saw Dom start on through the middle with Paul dropping to the bench with a view to coming on as a passer hitter. Vipers started set 3 slowly with unforced errors again creeping in and combined with Storrington playing there best volleyball of the game was closely fought with Storrington leading at times. Paul came in for Mickey and did well in a new role. The team did re-group well and managed to up the performance and again ran out comfortable winners.
Overall it was a good performance against a good Storrington team, but did highlight a few areas to work on in training over the next few weeks.
Matt Lay and Dom did well in their first of hopefully many appearances for the Vipers and it has been very good to see them progress well this year. MVP went to Andy Crockett for his well deserved hitting display. Next game is a crucial one against Adur away at 4pm on the 2nd Dec and if anyone is free to come and support it would be great.

Jets make it 8 from 8 with 3 - 0 win over Kings2

Jets secured another 3 - 0 victory against Kings2. With Dom away for the weekend at trials for the South of England squad the Jets were down to just 2 middle hitters with all other players available. Jets started both the first 2 sets very well and only started to concede points towards the end of each set. With Kishan and Dan starting through the outside in the first set and a good first pass it was not long before they established a strong lead. With some good early blocking and consistent setting the first set was in the bag. Kishan and Dan made way for Iain and Bernard in the second set and it was a while before Bernard found his hitting range. Following a similar pattern to the first set it did not take long for the Jets to secure another set. With more changes in the third set the Jets struggled to maintain their form. Missing Matt Wilkes organisational skills Kings took an early lead that they looked unlikely to lose. Some great movement from Martin to rescue some poor first passes saw momentum swing back to Jets who eventually managed to secure their second 3 - 0 victory of the season. Adur are next up in a few weeks time and fingers crossed the Matt L recovers from a twisted ankle that he picked up playing for the Vipers in the second match of the evening against Storrington. Well done for Bernard picked up his second MVP of the season.

Jets Latest Win Against The Vipers!!!!!

Jets unbeaten streak continued with a 2-0 victory against a Vipers  (plus guests) Select team! The first "set" saw the Vipers start poorly with a run of low scores and the Jets "striking" all over the place. Half way through the first set and it was "game over" with the Jets getting better and better and the Vipers Select team focusing on beating each other and not scoring a lower score the Iain!

Matt Lay's early celebrations were brought to an abrupt end when "Short A" somehow managed to hit 2 strikes, a spare and a 9 to rescue the same score as his son (phew that was close).

In the second "set" the Vipers Select stormed to an early lead until the young "Pups" started to showboat and introduce some "freestyle" shots which scored high for style, low on content and were usually greeted with cries of "gutter ball" from the Jets.

For a while it looked like the Vipers were going to pull of an unlikely victory with Danni showing the way with a couple strikes and Jan determined to destroy the back of the lane with his super fast deliveries! However Matt Wilkes decided to ruin our chances by hitting 3 strikes in a row to secure the 2-0 victory.

All in all it was a great evening and thanks go to Dan for organising everything.

Hi and Welcome...

...to the all new Worthing Volleyball Club Blog!

The old Website is looking tired and with no volunteers to maintain it I thought I would see if "blogging" was easier to do!
So far no special skills have been required and now all I need is your thoughts and input on what you want to see?
I have set up basic pages for the Vipers and Jets and will do the same for our other teams once you send me your photos and info you want included?
It would be great to have match reports on the site plus any other entries on how things are going with each team? It should be easy for individuals to add to the site and I can share passwords etc to representatives from each team as required.
Also, it is easy for anyone to leave responses to blog posts by clicking on the "no comments / 913 comments" at the bottom of each post.
Alternatively if I get no response and it appears that nobody uses the site then I will stop wasting my time. Please let me know what you think?
Cheers Andy

Worthing Jets Secure First 3-0 Win Of The Season

With Matt Lay and Bernard returning for the away match against Horsham, the Jets were back to full strength again and looking forward to a tough match.

The first set went to the Jets who started strongly, but did let Horsham have a run of points towards the end of the set. With three changes to the line up the Jets carried on in the same vein and secured another easy set. With more changes in the third set the Jets were in danger of dropping the set as Horsham rallied and the Jets took their foot of the pedal. Some strong serving from Matt L followed by a set changing pick up from Dan got the Jets back on level terms as the set headed for a tense finish. With the set at 21-22 and the Jets serving Josh was bought back on court at position 2 where he nailed 2 blocks in a row before Iain returned on court to close the match out.

Highlights from the match include strong serving from all most of the time, an ever improving block and a better first pass than in the last match. Good to see the back court option being played and need Dom to keep calling for it and keep swinging as it is a good out ball when we play the stronger teams.

Good hitting from Bernard, Kishan and Iain through the outside and I still maintain we have the strongest middle attack in the league (sorry Sharks) no matter which 2 from 3 middle hitters are on court. MVP went to Matt Lay (great ownership of the net) and it was another great all round performance.

Worthing Sharks 2 Worthing Jets 3

This was a very competitive match that saw the Jets retain their 100% record this season. Jets won a close first set, but after poor starts in the next 2 sets the Sharks took a 2 sets to 1 lead. The Jets made another poor start to the 4th set, but pulled it back to a 13-12 lead before up stepped Martin to jump serve 10 points in a row and take the match to a tense 5th set decider.
Martin was unable to repeat his serving heroics, but fortunately for the Jets Iain and Dom managed to find their hitting range as the Jets secured a comfortable final set victory. Luis secured a well deserved MVP for the Sharks and Dom picked up the honour for the Jets. Both teams had key players missing and despite rumours the Jets coach did not give Jon the tickets for the Man Utd Chelsea match which prevented him from playing for the Sharks

Beach Volleyball

Worthing now has it's very own beach courts located in Beachhouse park, next to the Aquarena.
Managed by the adjacent Beach Cafe, the courts give the club a fantastic opportunity to carry on playing through the summer. We have also picked up many new players through the increased exposure that they give to all the local clubs.
Prices start from £10 per hour per court, or £15 for both courts
Huge thanks must go to Volleyball England, Sussex Volleyball Association, Worthing Borough Council and, especially, to Freda Bussey and our very own Dani without whose persistance and hard work the courts would never have happened.

Jets

The Jets currently play in Sussex Mens Division 1. They started out as our "youth development team", but after two seasons in the top division in Sussex have lost that tag and are starting to challenge the Vipers position as the clubs "first team".

They are Coached by Martin Hicks and supported by team secretary Dan Wright.

Vipers

The Vipers are a mix of more experienced players and youth. Following a period when they dominated Sussex Volleyball for more than 10 years they are in a comparitive rebuilding phase while still managing to compete at the top of the division.

Vipers are coached by Mark Byerley supported by team secretary Andy Lay
