Jets lose to Storrington, but Vipers beat Hastings

The Jets travelled to Storrington without their coach (playing for Vipers at Hastings), Luis, Bernard and a late arriving Martin. The Jets lost a close first set with Iain setting, but with Martin taking over setting duties they won the second set 25-8. Two close sets followed, but Storrington managed to win them both and win their first match of the season (I suspect many more wins should follow before the season ends).

Vipers were away at Hastings and without Matt, Dom and Mark and moved to an early 7-0 lead before taking their foot of the pedal. They eventually got back in to the set which they won with some good blocking from Andrew and hitting from Jimmy. The second set saw the Vipers struggle to serve consistently and get a good pass to the setter resulting in Hastings winning by 2 points.

Vipers managed to wake up in the next 2 sets and close out a comparatively easy match 3-1.

Matt Lay picked up MVP for Jets and Damo for the Vipers.

Vipers head to the Christmas back at the top of the league on sets difference from Arun who beat Eastbourne 3-2 on Thursday in one of most fiercely contested leagues for many years.

Demons v East Grinstead

Demons Vs east Grinstead away December 2013
An 8 strong team, with one caffeine break on route, and Dan the man at the ready!
It was Ho Ho Ho all the  way, all those good girls would get chocolate crispy cakes with popping candy if they played well!
First set (the warm up) gave E.G false hope of a clean win, but never to drop their heads; the Demons came out fighting, and WON the second set!
Both of the following sets saw such a close fight, taking each team past 20 points each time, with a narrow defeat, heads held high.
A defeat, but not to be sniffed at!
Well played Sandrine, Ali, Sophie, Katy(MVP), Clio, Dorothe, Lorna, and yours truly..
Thanks Dan!
And of course; thanks to our new team mum/chef; Ally..

Sunday 1 December 2013

Vipers beat Brighton Adur 3-1.

Vipers travelled away to Brighton Adur with a strong squad that included both Edvin and Jimmy for the first time in weeks. Good reverse hitting from Edvin, a strong outside and improving first ball saw the Vipers take the first set comfortably. A poor serve receive at the start of the second set left the Vipers with much to do in the second set, but they had enough to recover and move to 2-0. An even worse start to the third set saw the Vipers 13-1 down. A good fight back following a few substitutions saw the vipers drag it back to 24-24, but poor serving let them down and gave Adur the third set.

A much better start to the fourth set along with great noise from our travelling support resulted in the Vipers taking a strong early lead that they never looked like losing. So a good 3-1 victory and well deserved MVP from Edvin leaves the Vipers just Hastings away on the 15th to play this year.

Worthing Ladies NVL Maintain Undefeated Season

Awesome weekend for Worthing Ladies National League team as they beat Wessex Leaf and Dolphins 3-1. Great support from family and friends and good all round performance.

Sunday 24 November 2013

Vipers win another long match against Scorpions.

Without Mark, Andrew C, Jimmy, Turbo and Edvin the Vipers again drafted in Matt and Dom for the return fixture against Scorpions. They started well securing the first set with comparative ease with good hitting through the middle as the scorpion loaded the outside hit. Scorpions came back strong to win a close second set. The Vipers again came back to win the third set with some strong serving and hitting from MVP Damo. Scorpions fought well to secure the forth set and take it to a fifth set again. By now last night's JD was starting to leave Nigel's body and some good blocking and middle hits saw the Vipers take a good lead that they were not going to give up. A good result with a depleted
squad and we look forward to another tough match next week against Brighton Adur.

Jets beat East Grinstead, but lose to Arun.

Jets welcomed back Martin as setter as they played away against East Grinstead with a full squad. A good all round performance started with Josh nailing the first point of the evening with an awesome block. Good setting from Martin enabled the Jets to open up EG through the middle with great hitting from Matt. So an easy win in the first set was followed by a harder second set as EG chased down every ball and the Jets struggled to get a serve in! Good hitting from MVP Dom when the pressure was on saw the Jets finish the last set 29-27 and the coach looked forward to the first market dinner after a win for the Jets.

Jets traveled away to Arun without Luis and Martin which meant a setting debut for Iain. With Matt Wilkes opposite, Josh and Matt Lay through the middle and Dom and Bernard through the outside it was always going to be a tough match.

Jets played well with spirit in each set and managed to get to 19, 21 and 22. Good setting from Iain for his first match and MVP Bernard was quick in back court and varied his hits and tips.

A good week for the Jets with a great result against EG and a good performance against Arun.

A Great Weekend for Worthing

Well done to the ladies for winning both National League matches 3-0 and 3-1. They remain undefeated in their first season 😀

The Sharks played against East Grinstead 2 without many of their regulars and both Dom and Matt stepped in to help Kishan, Iain, Ebber and Ben. Despite a great effort they eventually lost 3-1 with Iain securing MVP and a great performance from Ben who must have pushed him close for the decision.

Last match of the evening saw he Vipers take on a confident a Eastbourne who arrived with the only remaining 100% record in Div 1. The Vipers were without Mark and Jimmy, but welcomed back Nigel and Turbo. The Vipers started set 1 very strongly playing some of their best volleyball this season securing a convincing first set with relative ease. Eastbourne started to play better in the second set, but some good blocking from Andrew Crockett and hitting from Mickey saw the secure a much closer set. Into the third set and it was a close and intense end to the game. The vipers closed the match out 3-0 and highlights include some great pick ups from Turbo, a sweet middle from Andrew and great blocks.

The win opens up the league that see's Vipers, Arun, Eastbourne and Brighton Arun all having lost one match!

Vipers Win Long Match Against Scorpions

Without Jimmy and Mark it was always going to be a tough match, but it meant Matt Lay and Dom Wisdom had their first starts for the Vipers. A tight first set, but the Vipers finished ahead with Damo playing through the outside with Mickey, Andrew C and Matt through the middle, Andy setting and dom opposite.

Scorpions recycled the ball well and their never say die attitude saw them win the second set. A poor start to the third set saw the Vipers in trouble early on, but Matt stepped up with a great run of serves and some key blocks to get them back in to the game. The Vipers closed out the third, but were unable to win the fourth after another poor start.

All set for a fifth set and for the first time they started very strongly and raced to a strong lead at the turn around. The Viper maintained the lead to finish winners in a very had fought and competitive match.

In summary not the best performance from the Vipers, but key highlights we're the performances of both debutants Matt and Dom and the ability of the team to grind out a result when not playing well. A good performance from Scorpions who will secure their first win very soon if they carry on playing as well.

Devils v Demons Part1

Demons Vs devils nov 3rd2013
A dark, dark evening, the wind howled, the rainpoored....would there be fireworks? Could the demons sparkle? Did anyone think to bake pumpkin pie?? Or would the first match between the ladies turn into a horrorspooktacular???
Read on ....if you dare!!!

It was certainly a treat for those watching, and there were plenty of tricks to be had. First set was full of the holiday spirit, with a good fight from those demon spirits who gave a good effort to ward off those horny little devils, but sadly returned to the look of horror from Micky, who had just found out the was no bake off tonight! 13;25.
The second set saw fires alight, and the expectation of a sugar overload from the scorekeepers as they consumed copious amounts of goodies... by the way Damo, great Halloween costume; you looked proper scary!!...oh..sorry, my mistake...Anyway; 17;25 a respectable effort from the demons; it was certainly not the day of the dead!
The third set, with Lorna and Mickey making an emergency child care escape, was gruesome but not murderous, and matched the first set point for spiky point!

One ,two Worthing’s coming for you,
Three ,four, don’t drop cake on the floor
Five, six, get your volleyball fix
Seven, eight, don’t block late
Nine, ten, hit them balls in again!
Devils, you may win this time, but Demons are always ready to come out to play after dark!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sunday 3 November 2013

Jets back To Winning Ways

Jets travelled to Horsham without Martin, Turbo and Bernard needing a win to help secure Div1 status.  Without our regular setters Trees joined the Jets as setter opposite Matt Wilkes, with Matt and captain Josh through the middle and Luis and Dom through the outside.

With a different setter and playing in to the sun the Jets struggled to find their rhythm, but soon got on top to see out a close first set. Without the sun in their eyes the Jets started the second set well and after a mid set wobble, recovered to go 2-0 up.

2-0 up and it was time to mix things up and give Iain the chance to set! Playing in to the sun again meant too many poor first passes and despite some great blocking from Josh the Jets lost the third set 26 - 24.

Trees back setting and a fading sun behind us was not enough to prevent a poor start to the set and at 7-1 down the coach called a time out to read the riot act! The Jets won the serve back and some great serving from Matt L got them back in to the match. More control, less mistakes and the Jets were serving for the match.

A great result and good all round performance oh and this week our Libero Dan actually managed to touch the ball!

Thursday 31 October 2013

Jets lose to Eastbourne Away.

A depleted squad travelled away to Eastbourne with Andy stepping in to set with Iain opposite, Matt and Josh through the middle and Luis and Dan through the outside.

It was always going to be a struggle against a very strong Eastbourne team, but the Jets played well during the first set trying out a new serve receive. The Jets lost 3-0, but it was a much brighter performance with some encouraging signs and we look forward to the next match away against Horsham.

Vipers Win Away At Horsham1

Vipers travelled away to Horsham for a Sunday afternoon match and the starting six saw Andy setter, Damo opposite, Mickey and Jimmy through the outside and Andrew and Mark through the middle. With both usual libero's unavailable Dan stepped up from the Jets for his Vipers debut!

Vipers started strongly and set the tone for any easy afternoons volleyball taking the first set to only seven. The second set followed the same pattern and saw Dom adding some height to the front court for a while. The final set included a few more "fireworks" before Mark turned his ankle and was replaced by Matt, but the Vipers closed out another set.

Dan enjoyed his first match for the Vipers and must have set some kind of record by not managing to actually touch the ball the entire match! Mind you he managed to stay for the length of the match which is more than can be said for the Horsham Libero!

Demon's Match Report

Demons Vs Eastbourne; the home game...
Away at St.Moira’s...a turbulent Wednesday evening..

There was no way the demons were going to suffer another deflated defeat at the hands of an equally matched team...

The rain had poured, the cakes had been baked ( cheers Katy; hope you liked the photo??), trainers donned, sweatshirts doffed, war paint on, legs waxed, and vocal cords warmed up, and Mickey; back at the helm!!
First set; a tightly fought one, bringing a very close end. Definitely one not to be sniffed at. Good effort all round. , Eastbourne 1
Second set; big blocks (*) whoop ass hits and general Demon spirit to the end; Worthing 1
Third set; Cleo fired serves like flicking crumbs of the table; and apart from a gassy exchange, was in Tazmanian demon mode as she fired across court to set the team no end of balls! Unfortunately eastbourse just got the upper hand..

Never fear. Beaten this time, but the fire was burning bright, and everyone played well. The rematch will be awesome!!

Devils beat Valkyries....just!

Worthing Devils travelled to Eastbourne to play Valkyries without Trees, Chantelle and Gemma.  The starting team were Mel and Sintija (setter and opposite), Emma and Agata (middle), Amy and Sabrina (through four) with Robyn on the bench.

Devils started off looking nervous and were quiet on court, but slowly started to edge ahead in the first set helped by some strong serving from Mel when the score was even with two aces in a run of 6 serves.  Captain and MVP Sintija was defending well and making some big hits to lead the Devils to a close 25-21 win.

In the second set Eastbourne fought back with some strong serving and hitting, while the Devils struggled to get a good first ball into the setter limiting our attacking options.  Amy and Sabrina both played well front court with consistent hitting and had some early success hitting line, but in the end Eastbourne won 26-24.

Robyn came on in the third set and instantly started making a lot of noise on court, which helped lift the team along with her commitment to chase down the second ball (with a nice dive for thecameras!)  Em and Agata made a couple of blocks and Devils won the third set 25-21 before Eastbourne again came back to win the fourth set 25-19.

In the fifth set Emma lapping up the pressure put on her serving shoes(finally) and with the crowd (Thanks’ Sintijas friends, Trees and Paula) cheering wildly served 8 points with 3 aces. Suddenly the Devils started playing with a bit of confidence and with big hitting from Sabrina and Sintija on any loose balls, Devils won the fifth 15-8.  Finally a visit to Market Dinner after a win, even if we didnt get there until after 11!

Tuesday 15 October 2013

Devils beat East Grindstead2

Devils were back in East Grinstead for the second Monday evening in a row.  This week against their second team.  We had Mel back on setting duties, but Trees, Sabrina and Agata were bunking off.  Sintija was captain, but couldn't maintain Trees' run of 7 correct calls on the trot.

The first couple of points went to EG but once Devils got the serve Amy stepped up and took us to 14 - 2 with some accurate fast serving.  The communication on court improved as the set went on and with good first balls in Mel was using all her attacking options. Gemma was running the middle well and Em was covering a lot of space back court.  The set finished 25 - 14.

The second set started well Em pulled off a text book pancake unfortunately the rest of the team had given up on that point!  Amy again was our most consistent server, with two runs of five points, but she was also covering the tip well and getting good balls into Mel.  Chantelle was hitting well with hits down the line and cross court and the team had a 100% side out rate in this set, winning 25 - 8.

All was looking good in the third for a comfortable 3-0 at 11-6 but Devils relaxed a little too much and EG rallied.  Mel though organised and motivated the Devils, along with putting in a couple of great passes when forced into the serve receive helping Devils hold their nerve at 23 - 23.  Gemma kept cool and served into the hole and deep down the line to win the game 25 - 23 and secure the first 3 - 0 victory for the Devils this season.  Let's hope we have a few more now!

Robyn took advantage of playing through opposite and four and maybe next time will get her wish to play through the middle.

Amy deservingly was awarded MVP.

Results round Up

Finally recovered from a bad cold and busy work schedule, so time to catch up on some men's results!

Vipers lost 3-2 to Arun in a very close and competitive match. Vipers started well to take the first set, but Arun responded well to take the next 2 sets. Vipers pulled it back to 2-2 and turned round 8-7 up in the final set before Arun finished strongly to take the match. The game was played in a great and very competitive spirit could have gone either and was well officiated by Freda and Colin. With news of Brighton beating Adur and Eastbourne also unbeaten so far this season it is shaping up for another very close season!

Jets lost 3-0 to Hastings when Turbo made his setting debut as Martin was unavailable. A slightly better performance than the defeat against Crawley, but they struggled to cope with the two strong hasting's outside hitters.

A much better performance from the Jets against Vipers despite losing 3-0. With strong and very vocal support from the side lines the Jets pushed Vipers all the way in the first set. A poor second set from the Jets was followed by a rally in the third set where they again scored more than 20 points. MVP went to Matt Lay and Andrew Crockett.

Tuesday 8 October 2013

Devils beat East Grinstead 3-1

Worthing travelled to East Grinstead1 who've picked up some good players in the off season and are a well organised team with powerful serves.  Devils had a full squad except for Mel which meant Robyn was setting throughout the match.

The team that played in the NL started, but were slow back court and weren't looking for the gaps when hitting.  They still had enough to win the set 25-23

Devils started the second set with the same team except Gemma came on for Sabrina.   Again they struggled back court, but Gemma played well especially front court when she put in some strong blocks.  However Devils just lost by 2 points.

It took till the third set before Devils found the motivation to start playing.  Tree's made some great pick ups (diving practice paying off) and was hitting intelligently mixing the power hits with rolls and tips into the gaps keeping EG unsure what to expect.  She was supported by Sintija and Chantelle who started hitting the lines and the holes in the defence.  Agata in only her second match back also started strongly covering well back court and putting EG under pressure with a good block.

In the fourth set Em and Robyn were linking up well running the short and Em clearly had the taste for it as she started killing lose first ball's over from back court "'ave it!".  Robyn won a joust at the net against a tall middle.  I'm not sure who was more surprised us or MVP Robyn.

Monday 7 October 2013

Worthing vs The City of Bristol and Team Southampton

Match day two for Worthing Volleyball Club in the National League saw a depleted squad travel to Southampton, to play City of Bristol and Southampton Volleyball club.  Amy, Gemma and Agata were missing leaving Trees, Em, Sabrina, Chantelle and Sintija to man up and play all of both games with Robyn and Mel sharing the setting.  Luckily Em insisted on leaving 3 hours before the warm up as Sintija sent them on a long scenic tour of Southampton twice!

Up first were City of Bristol, Worthing started brightly with good movement back court and a nice first ball in.  Giving Robyn the option to use Sintija through opposite and open up the middle for some big hits from Em and Sabrina.  They closed the first set as comfortable winners 25-10.

Set two saw Mel come on for Robyn.  Bristol started better and were very effective recycling the ball and keeping the rally alive.  Worthing though had taken their foot off the gas making a number of serving errors and a bad first ball in was dragging Mel all over the court.  Em's serving and leadership helped pull it back to 17-17 but again Bristol edged ahead and even a tasty stuff block by Sintija couldn't turn the momentum back in Worthing's favour.

The final two sets saw Worthing win 25-12 and 25-13 with strong serving and hitting all round.  It must have been a tough call to pick an MVP but Sintija was the chosen one.

Who said Brinee couldn't jump?!

A.C.E

BOOM!
The roof is on FIRE!

Southampton laid on a good lunch with the pizza disappearing fast and nice cupcakes (although not as tasty as the ginger cake from last week). Game two saw Worthing take on Southampton who had beaten Bristol 3-0 in the middle match.

A tight first set saw us trading points early on with Southampton slowly edging in front to be leading 22 - 17 when Chantelle stepped up to serve the game out 22 - 25.

More impressive serving this time from Sabrina gave WVC a strong start and they were leading 8 - 2 after her serve run of 6 points mixing her powerful float with a cheeky short serve.  Sintija and Em helped Brinee out with some big blocks and intelligent hitting front court and the cry of "the roof is on fire" was ringing throughout the hall accompanied by Craig setting the beat on his makeshift drum!  They ended the set 25-13 winners.

The final set had Worthing starting slowly giving control of the set to Southampton, but good back court positioning and Robyn making a game changing pick up that Southampton were already celebrating changed the momentum of the game and Worthing close out the game 3-0 winners.  Consistent hitting along with good movement back court meant Trees took the second MVP of the day.

Thanks to the travelling supporters including Em's folks and Chantelle, Caz and Craig, Mark and Zack and our team statistician Damo.

Jets Struggle Away At Crawley

Jets lost 3 - 1 away against Crawley despite leading in all 4 sets.  The Jets started well enough with some great blocking from Josh, but after an extended delay while the score sheet was "sorted out" they struggled to find any kind of form. With slow back court coverage and too many basic errors we struggled all evening. Time to put a poor performance behind us and focus on Sunday's match against Hastings when the coach expects to see a positive reaction from his players!

Monday 30 September 2013

Devils battle to a 3-2 victory

Devils had a full squad to face an experienced Brighton Adora team.  Worthing started brightly with good hitting from Chantelle and Trees and everyone was on their toes back court getting good first balls into Mel and covering the block.  Devils took an early lead, which they never looked like relinquishing.  They finished 25 – 14 winners following a run of 6 points on Sintija serve at 19-14.

Brighton came back in the next two sets with good play back court recycling the ball and slowly picked off the points to win 25 – 15 and 25 – 23 in a tense third set.

In the fourth set both teams started well but Devils kept their heads and started finding the holes.  Again Sintija had a strong service run of 8 points to give the Devils a 12 – 3 lead and with Chantelle covering a lot of court and making good use of the roll down the line Devils took the fourth set, making this their second five setter in two games.

Having won the last set Devils started the final set with the momentum in their favour and kept nosing in front only for Adora to pull level.  At 14-13 finally Chantelle (MVP) claimed the match winning hit.  To end a very good (if nerve racking for spectators) game of volleyball.
Special mention has to go to the spectators who got behind the team.  They helped create a great atmosphere giving the team a boost during some very tight sets.

Demons win 3-0

Demons won their second game of the season 3-0 with a solid team performance against Dolphins2. Strong serving from Sabrina and Cleo helped to close out sets and Cleo claimed her second MVP in two games!

Monday 23 September 2013

Vipers Win 3-0

With only Mickey missing and Turbo making his debut a full Vipers squad took on Crawley. Vipers started the first set with Damo and Jimmy through the outside, Andrew and Nigel through the middle, Andy setting and Edvin opposite. The Vipers never looked troubled against what appeared to be  Crawley team without some of their players from last season which allowed Mark to mix things up in the second and third set. A good performance, but sterner tests lie ahead for the Vipers. Oh and Damo managed to sneak another MVP!

Jets Go Down Fighting

Jets welcomed back Dom for their second match of the season against new comers and Sussex Cup winners Arun. A great start to the first set saw the Jets push an experienced Arun team very close, but eventually lose by a few points. Another close second set went to Arun, but the Jets were playing the best volleyball I have seen them play with great back court coverage, strong blocking and setting from Martin. With Matt Wilkes starting the third set the Jets built up a good lead and won a well deserved set. More consistent serving, better serve receive (especially against a topspin serve) and experience in Div1 and the Jets might just of pulled an unlikely victory out of the bag. All in all a very encouraging win with MVP going to Matt Lay, but a strong performance of note from Dom plus great jump serving from Martin. It was a good all round performance that left the coach feeling very proud and looking forward to the next match.

Worthing vs New Forest and Bristol2

The weekend of our first national league match started with us finding out that our referee stand had been given to Lancing and that we were missing an official.  Luckily Freda and Colin kindly agreed to officiate for all three games and Em's dad saved the day by taking  the stand from Worthing High School to Southwick so the match could take place.

Worthing had a full squad of ten players, although Agata couldn't make the first game against New Forest.   Trees, Gemma, Sintija, Chantelle, Emma, and Robyn started with Mel, Sabrina and Amy on the bench.  Worthing began well with good serving and hitting.   Nerves got to a few players in their first national league game and serve receive was a little rushed limiting the setters options.  Some intelligent time outs from the coach helped, but New Forest finished 25 - 15 winners.

In the second set Worthing started with the same team except Sabrina started instead of Gemma.  A better first ball in from everyone meant Robyn could open the middle.   With the middles and outside hitters pulling the block Sintija was having a good set making points through the outside. The third set saw the same starting line up as the second and again the team started well with better communication in serve receive and some immense blocking from Em, which she subtly let everyone know about.  Worthing finish 25-21 winners.

A strong final push from the team with good hitting throughout the team, but especially from Trees and Chantelle at four saw us pip New Forest to the finish 25 - 17.  It was a tight opening to the set and a great game with both teams playing at a very high standard.  The team were helped over the finish by the loudest person there, surprisingly enough that wasn't Em or her mum, but Amelia....WORTHING, WORTHING, WORTHING.

In the Second Worthing match we played Bristol 2.

After a slow start against New Forest and then watching an epic 5 setter between them and Bristol, Worthing were keen to keep their momentum going and finish the day on a high.

Agata came on as Libero and after only one training session quickly got into the rhythm of the game.  It was good to see that Amy and Mel who hadn't played in the first game kept their focus and when they came on in the second game fitted in straight away with Amy making a couple of kills and Mel setting some great balls. Gemma started to dominate the middle in the second set helping Worthing win the game 3-0.   Sabrina making a run of 8 services in the third set didn't hurt either!

A cracking start to Worthing's first National League season!

Special mention has to go to all the friends and family that came along to support the team and all the volunteer's including SaraH, Steve Wisdom, Zuz, Carl and James for scoring and doing the lines.  Also the feedback on the lunch was very positive, personally I though the ginger cake was a touch!

Trees (somehow) got both the MvP's well played Trees.

Devils vs Dolphins 1 Match report

Away at Dolphins 1 was a tough start to the Devils campaign to retain the Ladies Division 1 title, especially with their first National League game this weekend on everyone’s mind.  They were without Mel and Agata, but had two new squad members.  Sabrina has stepped up from Demons and Robyn has joined from Ashcombe.  The first set started a little scrappy, with the teams trading points until Gemma had a strong run of 6 serves supported by some good blocking from Sabrina to carry Devils to a 27-25 win.

In the second and third set the Devils were getting good first balls in and Robyn continued to vary the sets allowing strong attacks through the middle and by Amy and Chantelle through four, but the Dolphins defence kept recycling the ball and they slowly pulled ahead.  Devils had a spirited come back from 23 – 14 to 25 - 23 in the third set but left it a little late to steal the set and went into the fourth set needing a win to stay in the game.

From the start of the fourth set the energy and tempo picked up on court, with Sintija, Trees and Chantelle finding their range the Devils closed the fourth set comfortably 14 – 25.
In the final set the Devils kept the momentum from the previous set and benefited from Emma’s organisational skills along with strong serving from Chantelle to finish 3 – 15 winners.  Robyn took the first MVP of the season in her first game for the Devils.

Devils Start With 3-2 Win Away At Dolphins

Well done the Devils 3-2 winners away at Dolphins with Robyn picking up MVP. Look forward to a match report.

Vipers Beat East Grinstead 3-0

Vipers welcomed new boy Jimmy to the team (sure I remember him from somewhere?) along with Edvin against East Grinstead at the High School. As ever East Grinstead played very well in defence ensuring the Vipers had to earn every point. It was a good match to start the season and East Grinstead made the Vipers work hard for the victory. Highlights from the game include some strong reverse hits from MVP Damo, good blocking and quick middle attacks from Andrew Crockett once he got fired up in the second.

Jets Win First Div1 Match Against Horsham in a 5 Set Thriller

The Jets were without Dom, but welcomed Josh back to the squad after he tried to remove his thumb at work. Horsham1 has seen a number of changes from the team that finished second in Div1 last year, but they won a tight first set against the Jets who started brightly, but faded towards the end of the set.

Strong words from Martin fired up the Jets who took the second with relative ease and carried the momentum in to the third set to take a 2-1 lead. Horsham responded well in the forth to set up 5th set decider. Jets started very well taking an early lead, however stage fright set in at 13-9 and Horsham came back with a late rally to serve for the match at 14-13. It was a very tense end to the set when the Jets won back the serve and Matt Lay managed to serve out for a 3-2 victory.

Wins for the Jets, Demons, Vipers and Sharks take a set from Brighton

The season started well for Worthing Volleyball club with wins for the Jets in a 5 set thriller, Demons winning 3-1 and the Vipers 3-0. The Sharks lost 3-1 away to Brighton, struggled to field a team, but were helped out by Trees, Chantelle and Sandrine.

Sussex Volleyball Association - Social Beach Tournament

Sussex Volleyball Association (Freda) ran a social beach tournament today for all Sussex volleyball teams at Worthing Sand Courts.  It was a cracking day with 3 Worthing and 1 Ashcombe Team entering on their home turf.

Don't worry boys I'll take this one, you just stand there and try to look pretty!

The Mexican Dream Team (Trees, Damo, luis and Em) ran away with first place but the plate was close with speedy gonzales (Andy C, Sabrina, Amy and Dan) just taking it on points against Ashcombe  (Dom, Robyn, Edvin) who fought back to take the second set.

Last week at the Beach

We will be moving training back indoors to Worthing High School from Tuesday 20th August, with the usual start time 18:00 for the girls and 19:30 for the fellas.

This means that 13th August will be our final beach session and we have decided to end the beach season with a mixed threes or fours competition and a BBQ.

Can you let me know if you want to join in the BBQ and/or the competition.  It be the usual format for the BBQ, minus our head chief as Andy is on holiday.  Amy will buy the food and drink and it normally comes to about £4-£5.

Sandbanks Beach Volleyball Tournament 2013

For the small group that travelled to Sandbanks the weather gods were kind and we had glorious sunshine all weekend.  A fantastic time was had by both the mixed fours teams and Team Minions made the eventual winners work hard in the second days semi final.  Thanks to Trees for organising the weekend and Carl and James for driving!

Congratulations to Dom who won the under 16's mens div 2 doubles tournament!
